Science day

On the 19 of september some year 8 students from Glen Eagles Secondary College visited us. Mrs scolyer explained what we were going to do. First we were put in groups of 4 and had a year 8 student as the leader. First we did a heart and brain dissection. We got to touch and play with them. What I thought was interesting was that the when you open the aorta you can see right through the heart. Next was the awesome rocket tea bags. So to do this we tip out the tea out and make a cylinder with the empty tea bag and stand it up next light it and the bag will burn and rise into the air. It was awesome. Next we made lava lamps. It was really hard to do but when finished it seemed pretty easy. After that we did some experiments with dry ice and don’t touch dry ice or you will get frost bite. I enjoyed it. I was fascinated by the heart and brain of a sheep and the brain was smaller than the heart.

Percentages

Percentages can be nearly based around everything.
They are based on Cooking, Sales, Surveys, Elections and Ipad percentages in battery and more.

Percentages are based on maths that is fractions to make a percentage you need to this for EG: 6/8 you would do 6➗8=0.75
then you would times that by 100 so it would be 62.5.%

To get a percentages you need to know your Fractions, Division and Multiplication.

Keep your Fruit Salad Looking Fresh

This week in 5P we have been learning about science. We did an experiment with apples where we sprinkled lemon on one half and left the other. The next day we came back and the one we had sprinkled lemon on was still white.
Ruby from 5p learning

This week we have been learning more about science so we did an experiment. The experiment was having two halves of an apple and topping lemon on one and nothing on the other. The results were that the apple with lemon on it was still white but the other was brown.

Rieley from 5P Learning

This week I learnt.

I have learnt that putting a Lemon on a cut fruit it won’t go brown has in the fruit without the lemon it will go brown in a day.

On Monday, the students explored the cause for the lemon juice keeping the apple looking white. The are writing these findings as a scientific report. I wonder what they will discover?

Skype with London

This week we Skyped some people from London zoo the biggest zoo in london. We chatted with Charlotte from Skype ,Jamie and Oliver people from digital explorer and Lucy a zookeeper. Oliver first talked to us. Oliver started wanting to be a explorer at 6. One thing he said was ” if you want to learn go out and explore”. Next he talked about the kombai  tribe people who he lived with in the Papua New Guinea rainforest. He said he was hard to learn there language and what amazed me was they lived in 100ft tree houses. he said the best time he had was meeting all people and making friends. Then we started talking with Lucy she talked about the London zoo animals. I think this was an amazing experience. I learnt a range of things.

Volume

For the last few days we have been learning about volume ,how it works ,what it is and how can you use it in life.
Volume is measured in cubic units or milliliters. The volume of a figure is the number of cubes required to fill it completely, like blocks in a box.

The volume of a rectangular prism is the length on the side times the width times the height. If the width is 4 cm , the length is 3 cm  and the height is 3 cm , what is the volume. It would be 36cm cubed

The sort of volume you would use in life is………
Gardeners
Medication
Cooking

We have learnt about displacement and what it is.
Displacement is if you fill the bath half way then you hop in, the water will move around me.  It is making room for me to have a bath.

For eg: if I fill a measuring cup up  to 500 ML.if I put a rock in it and it goes up to 800 ML it is making room for the rock.

The rocks volume then is 300cm cubed, as 1 ml = 1 cm cubed.

Becoming Web Designers

Some of our students have become web designers, managing to show their learning creating a personalised blog.

Here is one by Lachlan

Impressively, most students were able to create these with no teacher assistanceshoo swing they are taking responsibility for their own learning.
