Science Day

SENSATIONAL SCIENCE EXPERIENCE!

On the 19th of September 2013 some students from GlenEagles Secondary Collage in Endeavour Hills came to teach and do some experiments with us.

We got split into a group of 4 then we got started.
First we got to dissect an animals heart and brain. It was pretty disgusting but we got over it. It was really fun because we got to see where all the parts of the heart are and the two people we were buddied up with cut the heart and brain open.

Another thing we did was to make a lava lamp! We got a plastic bottle that was clear so we could see what is happening inside it. Then we filled the bottle up with 1/4 of water then we added as much as red food dye so that the water will go red. Then we added 3/4 of canola oil and a round tablet. Then we waited about 5 seconds and bubbles were coming to the top and it looked so cool!

We also did a few more experiments!

It was one of my best experiences so far this year!

Our Research!

This week we are focusing on our research and how we can expand on it. We have been given a chart to help us stay on track with our learning. This chart has been designed to stop us copying and pasting from other people’s websites. We have been well known as the copy and paste club. We have had a few people who have found them selves in the club lately.

We need to include these things to make our inquiry more effective and detailed

•Title Of The Website or Book

•The Author

•When the Book or Website was cited

•And the URL

So now in the columns we have to include a fact or a trusted piece of information from a website or book.

Also a supporting detail from your information will be good.

Now a reflection. It is to be in your own words and using good vocabulary.

Keep your Fruit Salad Looking Fresh

This week in 5P we have been learning about science. We did an experiment with apples where we sprinkled lemon on one half and left the other. The next day we came back and the one we had sprinkled lemon on was still white.
Ruby from 5p learning

This week we have been learning more about science so we did an experiment. The experiment was having two halves of an apple and topping lemon on one and nothing on the other. The results were that the apple with lemon on it was still white but the other was brown.

Rieley from 5P Learning

This week I learnt.

I have learnt that putting a Lemon on a cut fruit it won’t go brown has in the fruit without the lemon it will go brown in a day.

On Monday, the students explored the cause for the lemon juice keeping the apple looking white. The are writing these findings as a scientific report. I wonder what they will discover?

Rainforests

This week in class 5P has been learning about….

• The rainforest: What types of animals live in the rainforest.

We had to do a presentation on a South American animal from the Amazon Rainforest. Some were the red titi monkey and emperor tamarin.

It was very exiting doing the task because we knew we were learning about it because our 5P and 5S where skyping a a man named Oliver Steeds who is a famous explorer. He has lived in these remote jungles!

It was very fun. We had learnt lots of things.

Writing a Science Report

Science report
6/8/13 my class and I learnt how to do science report.

Steps of how to make a science report

1. Title
A general title would be a fabulous title to start of with.

2. Opening statement
Use technical language to tell about your title.

3. Series of paragraphs
Use technical Vocab like words that we don’t use for example dog, use canines and use different features of topics such as appearance, diet, habit, adaptation or behaviour

Use topic sentences at the start of to make people believe in your facts

Use facts and detail to prove that someone or something is real.

4. Conclusion
A conclusion is at the end of your report and they are short.

5. Glossary
A glossary is where you have to explain what the book is about.

6. Picture
Add a picture at the end to make people think about what your report is!

Hope this can be handy!

Sleep Research

(Names have been taken off….averages are down the bottom)

This week in 5P we have been researching on sleep and how it affects our learning.
On Wednesday we started the research on edustile we had to fill out a table. On that table it had, What time you went to sleep? What time you woke up? Did you get interrupted when you were sleeping? How did you feel this morning, afternoon and evening?  The test went from Wednesday to Friday the rating had to be given from 0 to 10. What we discovered is that when some people sleep for longer they tend to have a lower rating were as some people seem to sleep for less they have a higher rating.

Here’s an example say I went to bed at 8:30pm and woke up at 8:00am I would have to work out the hours in between 8:00pm and 8:00am so it would go 9:00pm, 10:00pm, 11:00pm, 12:00am, 1:00am, 2:00am, 3:00am, 4:00am, 5:00am, 6:00am, 7:00am, 8:00am. So the amount of hours I slept was 12 hours. Now I have to count the amount of minutes witch is 30 minutes. So the total amount of time I slept for was 12 hours and 30mintues.

Science Bob

Today in 5P we learnt about a man called Science Bob. We watched a video how he was experimenting on how to make ‘Elephant Toothpaste’. So we watched the video twice so we could write down all our notes and then we went of to make a procedure. My procedure included…

– Aim

– Ingredients

– Materials

– Method

So then once all our notes were down we started on our procedures.

Here is mine…

Aim:
To Make Elephant Toothpaste

Ingredients-
•Hydrogen Peroxide ( Volume 20 )
•Dry Yeast
•Water
•Detergent
•Color
•Funnel ( Optional )

Materials-
Plastic Bottle
Small Sized Cup
Safety Glasses
Coat

Method-
Step 1:-
Put glasses and coat on to protect clothing and eyes
Take bottle and pour 3/4 Hydrogen Peroxide ( H2O2 ).
Next add 1 flat tablespoon Dry Yeast to your small cup.
Now mix 3 tablespoons water with the Yeast and stir slowly.

Step 2:-
Add in a small amount of Dishwashing Detergent.
Next add 3-4 drops of Food Coloring.
Now after you have stirred thoroughly to create a liquid substance,
carefully pour into the bottle and stand back to watch your Elephant Toothpaste Explode.
