Time Zones: Flying Around Australia.

The past few weeks our class learnt about times zones in Australia. We looked at why we have times zones. We have them because the sun does not come up yet in some country when others have the sun. The passes in Australia through the east then later it passes through the west.

The times in Australia now are:

If Victoria,Tasmania and New South Wales were 12:00pm (Midday).

South Australia are behind  half an hour = 11:30am

Western Australia would be 9:00am because they are 3 hours behind during Daylight Saving.

Northern Territory would be 10:30 am as they are an hour and a half behind during daylight saving.

Queensland do not have daylight saving and are one hour behind. It would be 11:00am.

We are run on Greenwich mean time. Greenwich is a place near London where the time is based. We are -10 hours in Greenwich mean time. And Greenwich is also where other country time is based.

The class had a task to fly around Australia and work out the different times we get and leave there. Mr Sharp showed us a strategy. It was to use a time line. That strategy helped me and I’m guessing it helped others. It is a great strategy. It is one I will use when working out time zones.

I had fun working with time zones.

Parliament in 5P

Parliament

5P has been talking about Parliament and had set our room like the House of Representatives

Parliament  has 2 rooms called the Senate which is red and the House of Representatives which is green. The House of Representatives can fit 150 members.

Parliament House is in Canberra. In Parliament when the speaker walks in  everyone stands up. If you don’t stand up you could get kicked out.

When the speaker walks in and says “parliament is now in session” you can sit down.

In parliament you can be evicted if you say or do the wrong  thing.

Making a Law

What we have learnt from this is how to make a law.

To make a law you need to pronounce the law/bill which is then debated on. In your debating session you can add little bits which is called amendment to the law. Then then law will be voted on.

You vote by:

If you agree with the law you say”aye”

If you disagree you say “no”

That’s how to make a law.

Writing Focus

Last week 5P started to write a Narrative. We Learnt about the five key points we needed to use. The five points were 5 main things we needed to work on. They are as follows:

•Spelling

•Audience

•Paragraphs/ Sentence structure

•Punctuation

•Vocabulary

For Spelling we had to go through and check all our words were spelt correctly. The other option was getting a friend to check that we had correct spelling.

For Audience we were to focus on who we were going to write our book for. Meaning would it be a book for Toddlers, Young Children/Tweens, Pre-Teen/Teen or Adults.

For Paragraphs we had to ensure we had multiple sentences with the same idea. We had to make sure we added a variety of short and long sentences.

For Punctuation we have to remember to add our commas, fullstops, talking marks and exclamation marks in the right places to make sure our writing makes sense. By putting all these punctuation marks in the right place we will be able to make our writing will be better without using words like and, but & then.

For Vocabulary we need to focus on not reusing words to often and replacing them with new and more interesting words that will improve our work.

By making sure we use these skills we can improve on writing narratives.

Science Day

SENSATIONAL SCIENCE EXPERIENCE!

On the 19th of September 2013 some students from GlenEagles Secondary Collage in Endeavour Hills came to teach and do some experiments with us.

We got split into a group of 4 then we got started.
First we got to dissect an animals heart and brain. It was pretty disgusting but we got over it. It was really fun because we got to see where all the parts of the heart are and the two people we were buddied up with cut the heart and brain open.

Another thing we did was to make a lava lamp! We got a plastic bottle that was clear so we could see what is happening inside it. Then we filled the bottle up with 1/4 of water then we added as much as red food dye so that the water will go red. Then we added 3/4 of canola oil and a round tablet. Then we waited about 5 seconds and bubbles were coming to the top and it looked so cool!

We also did a few more experiments!

It was one of my best experiences so far this year!

Science Personal Inquiries

The students are currently working through their personal inquiries. One of their tasks is to find people who are able to assist them with their research. Below are the student questions. If you, or anyone you know could provide valuable information to a question, please let us know. We love when other people help us learn. You could be willing to participate in an interview, a skype call, or suggest a great website or book. No matter how big or small the information, it would help our students knowledge grow. Please reply to this post if you could help, or provide some information to one of our questions.

Published Worldwide

4 of our students thoughts and writing have been published worldwide!!!

Our new buddy class, grade 5 students at University School, Wisconsin, have just begun their school year. They have a focus on Kindness this year  and in our class we discussed why kindness was important. Some of the thoughts were enlightening. So impressed was Mr Piper, that he published our student thoughts on his class blog. Well done to Emily, Zackery, Christian and Lochlan.

Keep your Fruit Salad Looking Fresh

This week in 5P we have been learning about science. We did an experiment with apples where we sprinkled lemon on one half and left the other. The next day we came back and the one we had sprinkled lemon on was still white.
Ruby from 5p learning

This week we have been learning more about science so we did an experiment. The experiment was having two halves of an apple and topping lemon on one and nothing on the other. The results were that the apple with lemon on it was still white but the other was brown.

Rieley from 5P Learning

This week I learnt.

I have learnt that putting a Lemon on a cut fruit it won’t go brown has in the fruit without the lemon it will go brown in a day.

On Monday, the students explored the cause for the lemon juice keeping the apple looking white. The are writing these findings as a scientific report. I wonder what they will discover?

Numeracy

Numeracy and halving
Lately in our Numercay we have been focusing on Division. Halving is a great strategy with division if the sum end with  divided by 4, 2 6 or 8 because they are even numbers.
We have had tests on division and have learnt when and how to use halving in those equations.
Also we have learnt when there are remainders, there’s different ways to write it instead of for eg. r 6.
If the sum is 52 divided by 7 it would be 49 with a remainder of 3.
You could write it like this,  3/7 in fractions, or in decimals 0.42
I have learnt many different ways to say remainders and have strategies on division problems.

Rainforests

This week in class 5P has been learning about….

• The rainforest: What types of animals live in the rainforest.

We had to do a presentation on a South American animal from the Amazon Rainforest. Some were the red titi monkey and emperor tamarin.

It was very exiting doing the task because we knew we were learning about it because our 5P and 5S where skyping a a man named Oliver Steeds who is a famous explorer. He has lived in these remote jungles!

It was very fun. We had learnt lots of things.
